EP2

City Seventeen’s first outing on record, 2006’s EP1, was a cold, harsh and unrelenting landscape; the story of a gradual demise into the depths of insanity. The band have been working on a sequel to the bleak imagery for some time now, scrapping various iterations of the successor before settling on this new work. EP2 is a warmer affair, but the listener is advised not to be caught off-guard: there are demons haunting this place, too.

Leading out with the handclaps and stomps of “11 Degrees North / Hope / Exit”, the record is filled with the expansive space of the shimmering desert, hot sun hitting the scorched earth. Follow-up “Distant Drums, Parts I & II” finds a watering hole, but all is not as it seems—the saloon-bar piano peddling an off-kilter melody gives way to a flashback of EP1’s watery grave in “Four Minute Warning”.

“Eulogy” brings a close to the proceedings. It’s a memorial service, oscillating between joyous remembrance and uncontrollable grief, though we’re unclear exactly for who or what—we were never sure whether we were dead anyway.
